Essay

Bronchial asthma (BA). Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). To increase efficacy of BA treatment by reducing the effects of the concurrent GERD on bronchial reactivity and permeability. Methods: questionnaire, endoscopic and X-ray examination, express gastro-pH-measurement, 24?hour intraoesophageal pH measurement, spirography, methacholine challenge test, expiratory pick-flow measurement. For the first time incidence of the symptoms, clinical and endoscopic variants of GERD was estimated in BA patients. Sensitivity and specificity of instrumental methods revealing GERD were assessed and the algorithm for GERD diagnostic was suggested. A new criterion for methacholine challenge test assessment was introduced. GERD influence on bronchial reactivity and permeability in BA patients and in GERD patients without BA was assessed. The predictors of positive and negative effects of antireflux therapy on BA course were outlined.
