Object of the study: Morpho- and craniometry of the cistern of lateral fossa of cerebrum and medial cerebral artery. Purpose of the study: To study age-related features of the structure, individual anatomical variation in the shape, size and location of the cistern of lateral fossa of cerebrum, medial cerebral artery, and superficial medial cerebral vein for substantiation and development of ways of visualization and disconnection of the arachnoid of the brain. Methods of research: Cranio- and morphometry were used to establish variation in the shape and structure of the cistern of lateral fossa of cerebrum. Injection in the vessels in the zone of the cistern allowed to define the location of the main trunk and branches of the medial cerebral artery and the branches of superficial medial cerebral vein. The structure of different portions of the cistern of lateal fossa was determined. All digital data were processes with variation statistics and correlation analysis techniques. Theoretical and practical results: The findings of the research expand the existing data about the cistern of lateral fossa of cerebrum. Age-related features and individual variation in the shape and size, craniotopographical features of various portions of the cistern of lateral fossa depending on the sex and shape of the skull which should be taken in the account during the operations were established. For the first time, the methods of revealing and dissection of the arachnoid in the zone of the cistern of lateral fossa of cerebrum were worked out in an anatomical experiment and validated morphologically. New devices and special instruments for improvement of the quality of scientific research were suggested. Novelty: The range of individual variability in the location, shape, size of the cistern of lateral fossa of cerebrum, its craniotopographic interrelations with the large arteries and veins of the cerebrum was determined. For the first time, mor-phological characteristics of sex-related, age-ralated, and individual differences in the structure of the cistern of lateral fossa was given for validation and performing optimal approaches to it. A surgical approach to the cistern of lateral fossa, intraoperative revealing of the arachnoid and special incision in the arachnoid were substantiated anatomically and tested experimentally. The methods of revealing and dissection of arachnoid "A method of intraoperative visualization of the arachnoid of brain" Patent № 44519 А dated 15.02.02, bulletin. № 2, "A method of surgical approach to the intracisternal portion of the medial cerebral artery and its main branches" (Priority certificate №2001096110 dated 04.09.2001) were validated and worked out. To perform the necessary measurements and research, "Device for injections" (Certificate № 3093 dated 18.11.97.), "Combined cannula for injections in the subarachnoid space" (Certificate № 3260 dated 08.05.01.) were used. Degree of introduction: The findings of the research are used in the teaching process of human anatomy department, operative surgery and topographical anatomy department, nervous diseases department of Lugansk State Medical university. Sphere of application: Medicine, human anatomy.
