Essay

The dissertation aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of existing Ukrainian renderings of Nikos Kazantzakis' novels employing the notion of idiostyle and its dominants worked out by Russian formalists in the 20-ies of the 20th century and regarding the role of these dominants in the translation-oriented original text analysis and the subsequent translating of the original text. A writer's idiostyle is viewed as the principle of creating and describing of an alternative poetic world, as well as the way of poetic communication by means of his poetic idiolect, an actualised in his works system of speech means formed in the course of the writer's creative procession of language and due to his life experience and subordinated to the writer's worldview conception. Translators should, first of all, render the worldview and artistic dominants of the writer's idiostyle that can be achieved through full and correct rendering of linguo-stylistic dominants on account of the fact that linguo-stylistic dominantsrepresent the language world map of the ethnic group to which the writer belongs. The worldview and artistic dominants of the three analysed novels, the dominating concepts of the writer, are as follows: the essence of the Greece's God is the fight with the faithless (satisfied, barren etc.) for the freedom of the nation; the purpose of a Cretan's life is to carry on the ancestors' life business and to give the corresponding upbringing to successors, also to carry out everyday duties despite all the external and internal obstacles; a human being is considered to be a link in the life chain and every other generation makes a step forward thus securing a continuous existing of manhood and its development; death is a precondition of the development of life on earth and a component of the fighting process as it is impossible to achieve the aimed result without any loss, including a human one.
