Essay

The object of the research is the emotionally connoted vocabulary of limited use in modern Ukrainian fiction and its translation into German by means of multi-vector translation tools. The subject of this research includes the cultural and emotional patterns of limited-use vocabulary in translations of modern Ukrainian fiction from Ukrainian into German. The aim of the work is to define patterns of the Ukrainian-German translation of limited-use vocabulary, taking into account its cultural and emotional connotation in the source text and the target text. Research methods include hypothetical-deductive, definitive; descriptive; comparative translation analysis; interpretive analysis; contextual analysis; stylistic analysis; comparative analysis; linguo-cultural and cultural-historical analysis; comparative-historical analysis; pragma-semantic method; structural method, within which the lexical-semantic is applied; component analysis; transformational analysis, analysis of dictionary definitions and introspection method, as well as elements of quantitative calculations. The scientific novelty of this research involves the discovering of a new direction of translation studies – the theory of translation of limited-use vocabulary based on a cultural and emotional approach to its analysis in the Ukrainian-German literary translation. The theoretical significance of the dissertation is in the introduction of translation theory based on the cultural and emotional approach to its analysis in Ukrainian-German literary translation and involves the culturally motivated use of emotionally connoted limited-use vocabulary. The provisions of this theory should be considered as a contribution to the general theory of literary translation (quality evaluation of the translation of limited-use vocabulary), to the interpretive theory of literary translation (the establishment of typical translation techniques of limited-use vocabulary translations in fiction), to the partial theory of Ukrainian-German translation (defining the trends in modern German literary translation of limited-use vocabulary), as well as to the lexical semantics of the German and Ukrainian languages, comparative linguistics, comparative linguoculturology, ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics and ecolinguistics. The practical value of the work is defined by the fact that its results can be used both in translation and in teaching courses in the theory and practice of literary translation and interpreting (section “A linguistic approach to translation”), lexicology of the German language (sections “Lexical meaning”, “Lexical categories”), as well as in special courses on the translation of limited-use vocabulary, phraseology, linguoculturology, sociolinguistics and language ecology. This research can be useful for the compilation of dictionaries, textbooks and manuals on the theory and practice of literary translation.
