Nikiforova O. Lexico-semantic and genre and stylistic features of military-political translation.

The thesis focuses on defining theoretical and conceptual foundations of militarypolitical translation as a functional-pragmatic variety of military translation. The study of lexico-semantic and genre and stylistic parameters of military-political translation for the Ukrainian-English language pair is conducted based on fundamental defence planning documents – National Security Strategy, Military Doctrine, Strategic Defence Bulletin and unique genre – annual publication White Book. The manuscript analyses the semantic scope of military-political texts; identifies the stylistic dominant of military-political texts expressed in specific features through the leading functions at the grammatical, syntax and lexical levels; and proposes a classification of military-political texts into genre groups. The author offers definitions for special units of the military translation theory conceptual construct “military-political translation” and “military-political text” and provides a vision of the military-political translation functional model as the process of military-political texts translation reflecting all linguistic and extralinguistic factors stipulating the choice of a translator. The key element of the model is a translator/interpreter – the principal actor of the linguistic support for forces. The study presents the conditionality of transformations in the translation of militarypolitical texts by style and genre forming factors; analyses the peculiarities of conveying functional and semantic categories (modality, temporality and personality) and the clarity of the composition of military-political texts in the translation. The author identifies the signs of interdiscursivity of the studied documents and the specifics of their translation in the target text. The conducted comparative translation analysis of the source and target texts of the studied genres allowed to determine the main approaches and methods in the translation of military-political texts. The author analyses the lexical composition of the studied documents and studies the specifics of its translation; identifies difficulties related thereof and suggests the ways to overcome them.
