Essay

The paper focuses on the W.Shakespeare’s aesthetic code consisting of semiotically “charged” units of meaning found in the playwright’s “Othello. The Moor of Venice”, “The Tragedy of Macbeth” and “A Midsummer night’s Dream”. It seeks to explore approaches to rendering of playwrights’ aesthetic codes in general through the analysis of W. Shakespeare’s code, particularly in the Ukrainian translations of plays “Othello. The Moor of Venice”, “The Tragedy of Macbeth” and “A Midsummer night’s Dream”. The research aims to justify relevance of the use of semiotic methods while rendering W. Shakespeare’s aesthetic code through the analysis of translation strategies applied to the Ukrainian translations of the said plays. The methodology of the study is based on notions used in linguistics, translation studies and semiotics. The major scientific methods include component analysis, comparative analysis of translations and semiotic analysis based on principles set in Ch. S. Peirce’s classification of signs and R.Barthes’ typology of semiotic codes. The scientific novelty of the research is determined by the use of semiotic tools for the analysis of the Ukrainian translations of W. Shakespeare’s plays “Othello. The Moor of Venice”, “The Tragedy of Macbeth” and “A Midsummer night’s Dream”. The theoretical significance of the paper is determined by the use of semiotic tools the analysis of drama translations due to their ability to convey the double symbolic nature of drama as a genre. The practical value of the obtained results lies in the possibility to apply them in teaching theory and practice of translation, drama interpreting, comparative stylistics, comparative literary studies, history of the literature of the USA and Great Britain.
