Essay

The thesis studies Ukrainian artistic bookbinding as an original variety of decorative art. It deals with the historical stages in the development of West-European and Ukrainian bookbinding, defines stylistic peculiarities of the works, whose typology has been worked out by the author. The paper reveals technological specificity and a complex of artistic factors that influence the image conception of leather bookbinding. Main centers and leading artists are mentioned. The author analyzes ornamental motives, iconography, the structure, and stylistics of decor.
