Essay

The dissertation deals with the problem of reproducing realia in a target language (in this case - Ukrainian). It is the first research of its kind in Ukrainian Translation Studies. This is a many-sided contrastive analysis of two Ukrainian translations of Homer's "Odyssey". Different theories of artistic translation are also described with a special emphasis on poetic translation. Each translation was done in a different epoch, which influences the style of each translation. The translations from different periods enrich the treasury of Ukrainian literature.
