Essay

Different modes of fatiguing efferent stimulation result in alterations of dynamic characteristics of cat's gastrocnemius muscle contraction. In decerebrate cats, after fatiguing stimulation of homonymous muscles: (1) motoneuron firing and stretch-evoked EPSPs were predominantly suppressed; (2) monosynaptic reflexes evoked by stimulation of Ia fibres in the muscle nerve were continuously suppressed. The effects could in part be due to increased presynaptic inhibition, while recurrent inhibition plays a minor role.
