Essay

The dissertation gives theoretical argumentation of the toponyms' study importance as one of the most valuable language sources. The nature, development and loss of some geographic names due to the political system's changes are presented. The obtained material testifies to a close relationship between the bearers of Hungarian and other languages, which can be explained by their lasting co-existence in ancient Berehovo and its suburbs during many centuries. The latter has led to preserving and formation of new toponyms.528 vocabulary entries and more than 1200 geographical names have been collected by the author from geographic and cadastral maps of various periods in Budapest and Berehovo archives. The whole material has been analyzed in etymological and sociolinguistic aspects. All these methods in combination with comparative one give an all-round analysis of the toponyms in speech of the Hungarians of Berehovo and its suburbs in such a multiaspect survey.
