Dissertation depicts library automation history in the 2nd part of the XX - beginning of the XXI centuries. Author describes library automation as an important factor for modernization, innovation and transformation of libraries. Dissertation studies the development of library automation in foreign countries and in Ukraine. Main historical trends and approaches in library automation in various parts of the world, including Ukraine, -- in their complexity -- are described and theoretically summarized. Author has scrutinized the vast scope of sources and literature on library automation history, studied specifics of historical features of library automation depending on social, economical, technical and other factors in different parts of the world. Main periods of library automation history were determined and reconstructed based on main aims of automation, its tasks and outcomes. Author pays special attention to the analysis of the library automation development in Ukraine, describes computerization ofthe national, public and university libraries.
