Essay

The publishing activity of Ivan Franko has been researched on the basis of contemporary bibliological paradigms, his published books and newly found documents. The period researched covers the last decade of the 19th century and the first sixteen years of the 20th century (1916 being the year of the writer's death). The attention was focused on the editing of five series of books, Franko's work at the Shevchenko Scholarly Society and at the Ukrainian Publishing Union. His role as an editor and publisher of his own works and the writings of his predecessors has been researched, as well as his views as a key bibliologist, theoretician and practitioner of publishing process. A complex analysis of I. Franko's publishing activities has been accomplished against a background of social, political and cultural life of Ukrainians in Austria-Hungary (Dual Monarchy) and Russian Empire. The bibliological aspects and documentary sources of his published works have been thoroughly researched.
