Essay

The thesis is the first historiographic attempt of complex analysis of transformational processes in the Orthodoxy of Ukraine. Special attention is given to the questions of transition of the Communist Party leadership in the late 1980's - early 1990's to a new democratic policy in religious sphere which caused the revival of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic and Ukrainian Autocephalic Orthodox Churches. The author also considers the processes of independence acguisition of the Russian Orthodox Church structures in Ukraine which took place in the early 1990's and formation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate. Among the main problems analysed in the thesis are interrelations between the State and the Church, influence of Orthodox Churches on political life, relationships between Orthodox confessions, growth of religiousnessof population and expansion of the network of Orthodox Churches, influence of Orthodoxy on other spheres of cultural life of Ukraine, the problem of Orthodox Churches uniting.
