Essay

The dissertation examines the emergence, establishment and development of the library and information system at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU). Its activities - their stages and peculiarities of development - are determined to be caused by historical factors. Libraries of research institutions as the parts of the library and information system of the NASU are studied thoroughly at all stages of their development. Characteristic features of these libraries as stipulated by the social mission, sphere of activities, type of users, and the specificity of their collections are investigated. An analysis of structural-functional, organizational, technological, and personnel transformations, which took place in the library and information system of the NASU in the 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century, is provided as well as an analysis of influence of external and internal factors on this process. A conceptual model of a complex scientific and information centre based on the libraryof research institution is constructed. This model is seen as an optimal organisational structure for information support of scientific research in the future. The role of the Information and Library Council and the V. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine in their methodical and organizational support in the creation of an integrated library and information system of the NAS of Ukraine is shown.
