Essay

The synthesis and properties of derivatives of sulfurous, trifluoromethanesulfinic and sulfonic acids, bearing strong electron-withdrawing groups NSO2CF3 in place of one or two oxygen atoms, are discussed in the dissertation. An employment of a convenient imidation reagent, N,N-dichlorotrifluoromethanesulfonamide, has led to the novel methods as well as to the considerable improvement of the existing ones for the preparation of some fluorinated compounds of tetra- and hexavalent sulfur. N-(Trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imidotrifluoromethanesulfinylchloride reacts with trimethylsilanolates of alkaline metals yielding salts of trifluoromethanesulfinic acid with one NSO2CF3 group in place of an oxygen atom. Oxidative fluorination of alkaline salts of N-(trifluoromethylsulfonylimido)trifluoromethanesulfinic acid with a chlorine-cesium fluoride system leads to N- (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imidotrifluoromethanesulfonyl fluoride - a convenient reagent for introducing into organic molecules a strong electron-withdrawing substituent with the Hammett sigma constant value 1.40.
