Berdij T. Correlation of ethnic and national identity

The thesis reveals social and philosophical aspects of national and ethnic identity correlation in the structure of social identity. Great attention is paid to the methods of studying, logical and semantic sense of main categories and definitions, analysis of theoretical approaches to studying ethnic and national identity. The important aspect of the problem under studying is theoretical argumentation for approaches to harmonization of national and ethnic identity. It is proved, while studying the problem, that relation to social groups as similar in their ethnic or national characteristics reveals methodological limitations of such main theoretical approaches as primordialism, instrumentalism and constructivism. The analysis of correlation of natural and institutional grounds of social life shows the opposition of such mono-society as ethnos to nation, as poly-ethnical and poly-cultural institution. The objective sense of national life is revealed in discourses and proves that the character of national identity is constructed.
