The theoretical principles of the research of the problem of development of ideas about self-education in the history of home pedagogics in the end of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth centuries are shown in the dissertation. The state of the decision of this problem in historical-pedagogical and social-pedagogical aspects and of research basic terms is analysed, the notion of self-education is deepened and concretized. The main tendencies of the development of pupils’ self-education are disclosed, the main stages of evolution of ideas in home pedagogics till the middle of the XIXth century are defined. The principles of institutional education model are substantiated and the main levels of self-education are worked up. The peculiarities of development of self-education as the educational phenomenon are disclosed. As a result of the historic analysis of development of ideas about self-education three stages of this process are singled out, its time limits are defined. Historic peculiarities of self-educational activity and its main tasks are defined. The tendencies of pupils’ self-education development in home pedagogics in the end of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth centuries are disclosed and substantiated. On the basis of scientific analysis of pedagogical heritage of outstanding home scientist, pedagogues and public figures and of ethnic-cultural component of self-education generalizing conclusions about the possibility of the usage of positive ideas in the history of pupils’ self-education development in the practice of the work of modern Ukrainian school are made.
