The thesis presents complex investigation of handicraft and factory and works manufacture in towns and small towns of Podillya province of the end of XVIII - beginning of XX centuries. The main factors which influenced the development of industry have been studied. The categories of towns' settlements, the historical conditions of their development have been shown, the influence of national structure and social composition of towns' population on the development of handicraft and factory and works manufacture have been analysed. The state of towns' handicraft, factories and plants, their branch structures, social distribution of labour, genesis of capitalist relations in towns and small towns of the krai have been investigated. Special attention is paid to the analysis of legislative basis which regulated and determined various directions of industrial development. It has been cleared out that as a result of introduction of Russian legislation in towns' economy workshop handicraft that was based on century-long traditions of Magdeburg norms acquired juridical support and preserved domineering position in towns' settlement of the province up to the beginning of XX century. Having used a great number of written sources and historical literature the author defined the fraction of factory and works and handicraft manufacture in towns' settlements of the region. The author draws a conclusion that during the investigated period in manufacturing sphere of towns' economy handicraft production prevailed and it together with well adjusted trade provided the requirements of urban and suburban population in manufactured goods and services.
