Essay

Subject: selection of sunflower hybrids belonging to different maturing groups. Aim: to establish some distinctions for inheritance and variation of major traits of the initial forms in interline sterile and 3-way cross fertile hybrids; to estimate an optimal plant density and to develop new hybrids. Methods: hybridological, field, laboratory, math-statistical. Novelty: there are established some peculiarities in inheritance and interaction of economic traits of original parental forms in interline sterile and 3-way cross fertile hybrids simultaneously and there are determined parent and hybrid features as to morphological, biological and economic traits, their response to plant density according to the zone conditions. Results: there is obtained a new initial material with the trait of sterility; there are developed 4 high-yielding 3-way cross fertile hybrids of sunflower belonging to different maturing groups; there is estimated and recommended the optimal plant density in parental forms that enhances the yield of certified seed and commodity output. Application stage: the hybrids Aidar and Lyman have been registered in the Plant Variety List, which are perspective for distribution in Ukraine in 2007; hs. Stepok and Vybir are going through the State Commission of Experts. Application area: breeding institutions, AIC of Ukraine.
