Lectins of different structure, physical/chemical properties and carbohydrate specificity demonstrated their abylity for modulating effect on spontaneos and induced mutagenesis. These effects are dependent on the genotype of test-bacteria (repair-proficient or deficient), the nature of the mutation, lectin's structure and molecular organization, concentration, auxotrophic marker, mechanism of action mutagene and the order of lectin addition to bacterial culture (pretreatment or postincubation). Using the bacterium B.subtilis as a model and antibiotics as metabolic inhibitors it is shown that lectins have different activity on intracellular processes. Revealed ability of B. subtilis exolectin can inhibit transcription in vitro.
