Essay

In the thesis on basis of little known and published sources and analysis of ancient and modern literature the problem of beginnings and evolution of hetman's post among the Ukrainian Cossacks has been fully investigated. The separate kinds of this imperious post and their authorities have been picked out. The activity of frontier headmen and their role in opposition to the Turkish-Tatar threat on Ukrainian lands at the first half of the XVI century have been investigated. The problem of ethnic and social origin of the first Ukrainian hetmanate's representatives in the period until Bogdan Khmelnytsky's government has been examined. The list of these representatives has been compiled. The author has determined the role of the Ukrainian hetmanate in Cossack insurrections at the close of the XVI - at the first half of the XVII centuries. The details of hetmans' relationships with governments of Rech Pospolitaya, Muscovy, Turkey and some European states have been specified. The hetmans' relationships withOrthodox Church have been examined as a separate aspect. The total estimation of the first Ukrainian Cossack hetmans' activity during XVI - at the first half of the XVII centuries has been done.
