Essay

The beginning and the stages of tiles making development were covered on the basis of analysis of the tile remains from the collections of Ukrainian and Russian museums, of the archaeological and ethnographical materials and of the written sources. The processes of forming of tile centers were also studied as well as the technological and stylistic evolution of tiles. The connection between the tile production of Chernihiv region and tile production of other regions of Ukraine, and also Byelorussia, Poland, Lithuania, Russia was found out. The influence of the imported wares on the development of Chernihiv region tile production was defined. The typology of Chernihiv tiles was made according to formal and functional features of the decor. Their artistic, compositional and iconography features were studied.
