Essay

This dissertation is one of the first attempts in the Ukrainian historiography to investigate wide lands of the richest and most influential family such as counts Potocki in the period of social-economic transformation in Right-Bank Ukraine. The dissertation aims to explore, study and synthesize scientific scholarship and various archives materials related to the participation and important contribution of the Polish noble families such as Potocki to the economic, political and cultural development of the Right-Bank Ukraine where they owned villages, small towns, and vast pieces of land, palaces, factories ect. The research will be conducted by a thorough investigation of the Potocki's input into the region's economic development. Thanks to the great quantity of archives documents and literature the author made a careful study of the circumstances of transition of the lands belonged to Potocki from one owner to the other during the 19th - the first quarter of 20th centuries. Specifically, the followingissues will be addressed in research: Evolution of the Polish noble families's land ownership on the right-bank of Ukraine; The Russian policy towards land ownership of the Polish noble families during periods of the 19th - the first quarter of 20th centuries. A particularly interesting aspect in the period of the Polish revolts and the relating changes in the legislation caused by the revolt, which affected changes in land possession by the Szlachta. The general tendencies of legal rules of Right-Bank Ukraine land ownership were analyzed on the basic of legislative acts of Russian empire; Support of the rebel movement against the Russian dominance in 1830-1831, 1863 years by the famous Polish families and confiscation of their lands by Russian tzarist regime; Involvement of Polish nobility into the commodity-money relationships in the Russian Empire; The Polish nobility's influence over the formation and development of various fields of agriculture. The author retraced the dynamics of the quantity and quality changes in Potocki's estates, showed the role of this family in the development of different branches of industry (such as sugar and alcohol factories); History of the Potocki family members shown in the genealogy graphs. To answer these questions, the author of the dissertation worked with various archives resources in Ukraine, Poland and Russia. The dissertation is of special significance for the scholars, researchers and students in Ukraine, Poland and Russia with regard to the neighbouring countries' close interdependence and interconnection in the past, their common heritage in many fields.
