The paper based on the complex analisis of the sourses is the study of education activity of the orthodox clergy in the Poltava Diocese (XIX - the beginning of the XX century). The dissertation shows the policy of the empire government in the field of clerical and primary education; provides general characteristic of conditions for appearing as well as main periods of developing of the education institutions in the Poltava Diocese: clerical (seminary and clerical schools) and primary schools (parish schools and schools for illiterate people). In addition, material provision of the education institutions, pupils and teaching staff, organization of the education and upbrining process were analyzed.
