Essay

The Thesis is dedicated to comprehensive study of St. Sophia Cathedral history as a functional church and cultural monument in 1917-41. On the basis of many source of information and literature, we review fortunes of buildings in the territory of the St. Sophia Cathedral of Kyiv and ecclesiastical belongings in the light of religious policy of Bolsheviks, analyse phases of Old-Kyiv Parish of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church establishment in the Cathedral, its relations with representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Power. We also show activity of a special scientific institution, created for conservation and study of this monument - Commission for St. Sophia Cathedral, state of the Cathedral and its monumental painting. The paper gives an account of transformation of the St. Sophia Cathedral from a functional church into the St. Sophia Museum and shows basic fields of its activity. The Thesis examines effect of the Soviet totalitarian system on scientific researches and conservation of monuments. It also shows the place of the St. Sophia Cathedral in spiritual, cultural and scientific life of Ukraine in 1917-41.
