Object: Ukrainian public thought of the second half of XIX century. Subject: the system of Ukrainian intelligentsia's notions concerning peasantry in 1860 - 1880s. Aim: composite reconstruction of the notions about peasantry in the Ukrainian public thought of 1860 - 1880s. Methods: historical-genetic, historical-comparative. Results: social and intellectual contexts of the development of notions concerning peasantry, shared by representatives of Ukrainian movement, have been studied; the place of peasantry and peasant culture in the development of the Ukrainian national project has been determined; specificy of the description of popular character and Ukrainian peasantry's social-economic transformations at the second half of XIX century in the texts of Ukrainian intelligentsia has been analyzed.
