Essay

The object of study – life of A.P. Kovalivsky, the historian and source researcher, his scientific heritage and his place in a history of Ukraine of ХХ century. The purpose of study is complex and regular research and reconstruction of a life and scientific heritage of A.P. Kovalivsky on the basis of the unbiassed analysis archival, published documentary materials and special literature. The methods: chronological, periodization, comparative-historical, retrospective, actualization, structural-system, statistical, sociological, biographic, social psychology. The practical value of the work consists in an opportunity of wide use of its materials in the monographies, generalizing works and manuals on a history of Ukraine, history of the Ukrainian culture, religion studies and ethnography. The results and materials of research can be attracted for preparation of courses of lectures on a history of Ukraine, Ukrainian historiography, source studies, Ukraine studies, and also are used in work of local lorestudies. This dissertation is the first comprehensive work on the life and scientific work of A.P. Kovalivsky (1895 – 1969), professor of Kharkiv University, who was one of prominent Ukrainian historians and source researchers in 20th century. On the basis of the research of his creative heritage, little known materials in archival depositories and other kind of sources, which had been published before, all the aspects of the scientific work of A.P. Kovalivsky as a historian, as a specialist of the spiritual culture in Ukraine, Oriental studies and Arabian manuscripts were analyzed. All periods of life and work of the scientist are covered. Also the main problems which had been in the center of A.P. Kovalivsky’s attention were considered: actual cults, the oldest religion of Ukrainians, life and creative work of G.S. Skovoroda, Oriental studies in Kharkiv University.
