Essay

The thesis considers lexical modulation as a translation technique which provides adequacy in literary translation from English into Ukrainian. The paper investigates types of lexical modulation as well as the logical mechanism of each lexical modulation type. Factors and frequency of lexical modulation application are revealed within the framework of English-Ukrainian literary translation. The thesis reveals a correspondence between different lexical modulation types. The first chapter reveals the notion of lexical modulation. Lexical modulation is treated as a translation technique which presupposes the change in conceiving the object of reality by means of variation of its characteristics. Lexical modulation comprises such types of transformations as generalization, concretization, sense development, and antonymic translation. The technique is based on the following logical interrelations of the notions: metonymical, metaphorical, cause-and-effect, irreconcilable, and counter relations. Types of lexical modulation rest upon five logico-semantic operations: abstraction, inclusion, shift, and overlap.
