Essay

This dissertation examines folk icons on glass as a separate artistic phenomenon characteristic of Central European cultures. This work is the first one in art history to consider Ukrainian icon-painting on glass as an equal component in the European cultural legacy. It gives a comprehensive overview of the genesis of folk icon-painting on glass in Central Europe, suggests a typology of the artifacts based on their significant thematic components, and determines that in folk painting on glass, icons were the most popular genre. The work establishes the thematic preferences of various art schools, or guilds, as well as the main compositional types of works. It specifies dating and the authorship of certain groups of Ukrainian icons on glass, divides them into groups by their stylistic features, and includes their comparative analysis with specimens from neighboring ethnic groups.
