Essay

Based on varied factual background with the use of a wide range of representative historical sources, the author attempts a comprehensive and profound study of social and legal status of rural people in the times of the so-called “new order.” He also characterizes social and economic realities of everyday rural life under the Nazi occupation. The research follows the character and ways of social protection and welfare for rural people in 1941-1943 and sheds light on its social and economic status in the period under consideration. The dissertation also provides insight into the social aspects of the occupants’ agricultural policies and illustrates the impact of these “changes” on the living standards of rural population. It provides an outline of the housing conditions problem in the country just after the occupation ended. The author concentrates on peculiarities of how basic social and communal needs of the people residing in the particular region of Ukraine were satisfied, including the state of affairs in the field of leisure and recreation activities in 1943-1945. The dissertation defends the thesis that everyday life of rural people in the war-ravaged and occupied country was particularly hard.
