Brytіk O. A method and the results of the water-melon heterotic hybrids breeding

Object: the water-melon heterotic hybrids breeding on a fertile basis. Aim: to update the method of made out of water-melon heterotic hybrids breeding on a fertile basis that not need the hand work and to obtain the water-melon heterotic hybrid. Methods: breeding, organoleptic evaluation, weight, statistic. Novelty: the complex study of the variability and inheritance of the habitus traits was carried out in oil flax under various environments. Results: the collection was studied and monoecious lines fit for using in heterotic breeding have been selected. The combining ability of the initial lines for productivity, earliness and palatability has been evaluated. Some peculiarities of F1 hybrid heterosis manifestation have been revealed. The cross combinations with high heterosis effect have been selected. An optimal layout of parental lines in seed production nursery with free pollination for obtaining high-quality and cheap hybrid seed has been developed. Application stage: new hybrids of water-melon named Debut and Ranok have been developed. They entered in the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine in 2005 and 2008 accordingly. It was patented a new method. A valuable monoecious line МLK has been registered at the National Centre of Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine of the Plant Production Institute named after V.Ja.
