Essay

In the thesis the problem of research and teaching of Byzantinian history in Kyiv University in time from second half of XIX century to 1917 is for the first time put as it is and viewed in complex. Byzantinology in the University was represented in that period by professors of faculty for history & philology Philip Ternovsky, Tymofey Florinsky and Iulian Kulakovsky. In the research there are clarified the questions about contents, character, significance of their researches and about the outer influences onto them; the directions of them are analyzed as well. The considerable attention in the dissertation is given to the question why despite the presence of honored specialists in St. Volodymyr University there never had arisen the scientific school for byzantinology.
