Essay

The thesis explores current trends, developments, processes and paradoxes of British quality press via prism of transformation from elitism towards egalitarianism. In the first chapter attributes, functions and specifics of British quality press is uncovered, determination of British quality press in historical retrospective has been analyzed, main reasons and consequences of British press differentiation into quality and popular one were identified. In the second chapter the process of Great Britain's quality press' tabloidization, convergence of quality and popular papers and modern state of British quality newspapers have been explored. In the third chapter Internet versions of quality papers of Great Britain, dilemma of mediatization and democratization via prism of tabloidization of British quality newspapers and paradigms of mediaeconomic development of British quality press were analyzed. The urgent necessity of transformation of existing commercial media-economic paradigm of British quality press into public one has been substantiated for the sake of saving and multiplying the best traditions of English journalism, securing it from extremes of commercialization (tabloidization) and insuring journalists from political and commercial pressures.
