The thesis is devoted to a study of «The Economist» weekly (London, Great Britain, 1843–) which became widely integrated into the Ukrainian information space after Ukraine got the independence. The works of Ukrainian and foreign researchers on press journalism and particularly, «The Economist» have been analyzed. The main historical aspects and functions, the main tendencies in the weekly’s development were researched and determined, especially today’s activity. The thematic and typological analysis of the publication as a news magazine was carried out, the problems and thematic characteristics of its content were outlined, especially of its printed and digital versions. Particular attention was paid to the forms of the weekly’s presence in Ukrainian information space. Articles covering news from Ukraine, which occurred to be the most resonant for the Ukrainian society were revealed and characterized. The main approaches in covering the Ukrainian social, political, economic and cultural issues are analyzed, as well as the perception and understanding of this content in the Ukrainian mass media environment was traced. Weekly’s publications in Ukrainian printed mass media were divided after subject and thematic principles, as well as the way which Ukrainian media and journalists use The Economist’s content (citations, full-text and fragmentary reprints). The practical value of the work lies in the introduction into scientific circulation in Ukraine of English-language works of foreign researchers on the history and practical aspects of the world, and particularly the British journalism of the 19th – early 21th centuries; identified and characterized the most resonant for Ukrainian society publications from «The Economist» on Ukraine (more than 819 articles), which allowed to analyze the features of coverage of Ukrainian issues (social, political, economic, cultural) by «The Economist» specific foreign press releases, and thus trace the way of understanding of this content in the Ukrainian mass media environment. The specifics of the use of materials of the British weekly by Ukrainian journalists, which consists in citing, quoting, full-text and fragmentary reprints from «The Economist», which contributes to the objectivity of the issues covered and strengthens the arguments of Ukrainian publications. The work shows the differences in typological approaches in referring publications to certain types of edition. The research will contribute to the improving of information, analytical and professional skills of journalists, to the development of a certain algorithm in the work of the mass media. The proposed basic model of studying the press in historical, functional and typological aspects can be used in historical-bibliographical and press studies of the history of modern journalism; in the educational process as materials for training courses for training specialists in journalism
