Object - the process of teaching students in Slobozhanschyna higher educational establishments in the second half of XIX - the beginning of XX century ; aim - to systematize theoretical achievements and generalize the experience of organizing students' independent work in Slobozhanschyna higher educational establishments during the period under research in order to improve the teaching process in present day institutions of higher learning in Ukraine ; methods - historical-pedagogical, theoretical and system-structural, problem-oriented and comparative, retrospective; novelty - for the first time the integral analysis of the problem of students' independent work organization in institutions of higher learning in the national pedagogical theory of the second half of XIX - the beginning of XX century has been carried out, the approaches to the essence of the terms "students' independent work" and its "organization" have been specified; results - the special teaching course "Organization of Students' Independent Work in Institutions of Higher Learning" (historical-pedagogical aspect) for students of institutions of 3 and 4 levels of accreditation has been developed; field - pedagogy
