Essay

This thesis is devoted to the research of culture and education of ethnic minorities in Kyiv in 1920-1930. Based on the analysis of sources and previous studies the dynamics of the formation of Kyiv ethnic composition have been traced. War and revolution events of 1914-1920 resulted in the formation of new ethnic population structure, which was characterized by the diversity of national minorities representation. According to urban census of 1923 there were representatives of 66 different nationalities inhabiting the city, a total of about 413,1 thousand people. The multi-ethnic composition of the population lasted through the whole interwar period. Ethnic minorities in Kyiv differed by social-economic, cultural and educational level. In particular, the representatives of European nations had higher educational level and enjoyed better welfare. On the other hand, Eastern minorities were, in fact, in self-imposed isolation, since the majority of their representatives did not command Russian and Ukrainian languages to the needed extent. It has been found that in 1920-1930, under the influence of "korenizatsiya" (indigenization) policy, as well as the influence of ongoing industrialization processess, social-economic conditions of national minorities were changing, the traditional way of life of ethnic communities was being cast down.
