Essay

Object: breeding of kidney beans for resistance to diseases. Aim: development of a new original material for kidney beans' breeding for the resistance to the causal agents of Fusarium root rots and bacterial leaf spots. Methods: field, laboratory, statistical. Novelty: some peculiar features of the manifestation of resistance in kidney bean specimens belonging to different eco-geographical origin to causal agent of Fusarium root rots and bacterial leaf spots, species' composition of the local population of the genus Fusarium sp. are determined. Some sources of separate and valuable traits' complex with combination of high genotypic effects and ecological plasticity are distinguished; some peculiarities of variability and inheritance of valuable traits are established. The original material for kidney beans' breeding for resistance to diseases and productivity and a new cultivar of kidney beans named Veselka are developed. Results: the bean trait collection including 127 specimens in accord with resistance to diseases' agents combined with economical traits has been formed. Two lines for food consumption (L-15 PG, L-19 GP) and one line of green beans (L-11 BW) with the combination of resistance to diseases (up to 15% of affection) and high productivity, drought resistance, suitable to machine harvesting have been developed. The kidney bean cultivar "Veselka" for food consumption that is distinguished by its large seeds, earliness, drought resistance, its resistance to fusariose and bacteriose (up to 20% of affection) has been created. Application stage: 127 specimens of the trait collection of common beans as to resistance to diseases' agents and 3 selected lines in the combination of valuable traits have been resistered in the National Centre for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine. The cultivar of common beans for food consumption "Veselka" has been entered the State Plant Variety List suitable for distribution in Ukraine since 2010. Application area: breeding institutions.
