Essay

For the first time in domestic historiography the complex reconstruction and analysis of life and creative development of Nadiya Surovtsova, a famous Ukrainian public and political figure, literary woman and memoirist, a long-term prisoner of GULAG, was made. The author also investigated how she interacted with her environment during 1910th - first half of 1980th. It was proved that the "inbuilt" of N. Surovtsova's biography into the common context of social, political and cultural life of 1910th - first half of 1980th opened great research perspectives. Her biography contained absolutely different and even contrasting periods, such as: Ukrainian national revival at the end of XIX - beginning of XX centuries; illegal and half-legal political activity of nationally conscious Ukrainian youth; the First World War; uncompleted Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-21; political emigration; struggle with famine of 1921-23; radyanofilstvo and "zminovikhivstvo"; "ukrainization" and national revival in the UkSSR; repressions of totalitarian regime; the history of GULAG by eyewitness; Khrushchev's "thaw" and rehabilitation at the end of 1950th, and finally "shestydesyatnytstvo" and more wide perspective of Ukrainian dissidence. The emergence and developments of such political phenomena as "radyanofilstvo" of 1920th were investigated. It was found out how such well-informed "returnees" as S. Vityk, Kh. Prystupa, N. Surovtova and others took part in the forming of data base of political emigrants in East Central and West Europe.
