Borovynskyy I. Image interpretation of English and American romantic poetry in Ukrainian translations.

In Chapter I challenges in English-Ukrainian translations regarding the interpretation of images in romantic poetry are revealed and pinpointed. The research determines ways of overcoming these difficulties. Special attention is paid to semantic differences in English and Ukrainian perceptions of image interpretations in multiple translations of original texts. The thesis reveals that versatile romantic poetry images can be preserved in translations by means of semantic shifts and stresses of a dominant element in the image structure. Chapter II presents an in-depth analysis of ways of avoiding the simplification and distortion of versatile romantic poetry images in Ukrainian translations. The research proves dependence upon the context and specificity of original poems. Various structural elements may be deemed by translators as dominants, namely emotionality, metaphorical coloring, symbolism and phonetic organization. Each of the aforementioned dominants can have different relations to other elements of the image structure which requires a flexible approach on the part of a translator. For instance, while preserving certain emotionality of original images, it is translator's intention to grasp the overall emotional impact rather than deal with separate lexical units. If metaphors represent the core elements of the image structure, translators tend to preserve or exceed the quantity of original metaphors, maximizing the versatility of original texts. According to the samples analyzed, phonetic representation of images in romantic poetry is always taken into consideration by Ukrainian translators, which results in a constant search for various correlations between the sound and the meaning of language units.
