Essay

comprehensive analysis of wide range of the archived sources and scientific literature traced the changes in number of cities, them administrative and legal status dynamics of urban population and its socio-ethnic and economic structure. Attention is focused on development of military-strategic functions of towns, industrially-handicraft manufacturing, trading, transport network, forming of the bank-credit system, cultural and educational environment. In the dissertation proposed the periodization of socio-economic development of cities, their classification and typology in the second half of ХІХ - at the beginning ХХ of century.
