Essay

This dissertation on the basis of archival data and published works and letters focuses on Dmytro Yavornytsky's accomplishments in collecting, exploring, and publicizing of folkloric and ethnographic legacy in terms of Ukrainian Ethnology advancement. It traces the shaping and evolution process of Dmytro Yavornitsky's scientific viewpoint, explores his contribution to the cause of gathering and researching Ukrainian people's song tradition. This work exposes the degree of research in the field of Ukrainian Kobzarstvo's origination and evolvement according to the scientist's records. Tremendous value of his research on manners and customs of Ukrainians, particularly Cossacks, peasants and sailors, was ascertained. On the foundation of little known archival ethnographic materials the analysis of the scientist's role in Ukrainian Ethnography development was conducted and it was determined what specific characteristics were attributed to his works during different periods of his life.
