Demidov A. Activity of Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company (1856-1920) in the south of Ukraine

The history of Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company (ROPiT) (in the second half of XIX - the beginning of XX century) is firstly investigated. On the basis of attraction sources and of the scientific literature it is established that ROPiT thanks to the state system of grants and successful activity of managing directors during the mentioned period turns to a domestic monopolist of the market of sea transportations and carries out an essential role in social and economic life of region. Influence of the company on formation of system of sea and river messages in the Black Sea and Azov basin is revealed. The author reflects military-political aspect of activity ROPiT. Contribution ROPiT to maintenance of sea safety of south Ukraine cities is shown. Ship-repair and ship-building activity of the company is analyzed. The questions connected with nationalization of transport system of the Black Sea and Azov basin are considered.
