Koniushenko Y. The Historical and Philological society under Novorossiya university in Odessa (1888–1923).

The research subject is humanities societies that existed in Ukrainian lands of the Russian Empire. The research objective is comprehensive examination and analysis of the factors that facilitated the Historical and Philological society under Novorossiya university establishment, as well as the main stages of the society history, and its scientific, publishing and educational activities. Scientific methods: historical chronological, diachronic, historical genetic, historical comparative, historical systematic, problematic, retrospective, scientific heuristic. The research scientific novelty: (i) it’s the first comprehensive historiographic study of the Historical and Philological society under Novorossiya university activities; (ii) the author has put a special emphasis on the society’s background, the main stages of its history and the principal areas of its scientific, publishing and educational activities; and (iii) researched the range of scientific problems the society’s members worked on as well. The research practical use: its scientific points and deductions, and the facts published by the author could be used for development of educational courses on Ukrainian historiography, Ukrainian culture history, local studies. The thesis substance could prove useful for further research of both historical and philological societies of that kind and wider problems of history of historical science.
