Essay

The research explores the particular ways the poetry of Robert Burns has been interpreted by Ukrainian translators. It features the present state of translation and study of Burns in Ukraine and highlights some vital theoretical problems of translation. It regards the legend of Burns to be a quality of the sign and treats the Scots language to be a basic nation-forming and stylistic factor. The paper gives a definition of the nature of interpretation through its procedure and cross-subject relations. It considers the problem of comprehension and the mastering of the poet's world by means of translation, providing a detailed study of various contexts of the original and translation. The poetic heritage of Burns and his aesthetics are treated from the viewpoint of translatability, in particular through the structural theory of verse translation and that of intersemiotics. A separate chapter focuses on the role of the creative subject-doer of translation, the methods of translation of Burns that were peculiar to Pavlo Hrabovsky, Vasyl Mysyk and Mykola Lukash, and equally on the interaction of creative individuals, those of the poet and his translators.
