Essay

Based on the involvement to the scientific research of significant data of archive documents, studying, analysis and interpretation according to the current methodology of published sources and scientific literature, for the first time in Ukrainian history the dissertation comprehensively revealed imperial confessional politics of imperialistic and synodic models in religious sphere of Podilians. It also reproduced the system, specifics and features of the formation of orthodoxy in the province in an unequal struggle with the dominance of the Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic faith, the dominant position of the Polish landlords in the economic life of Podillya region. The dissertation substantiates and highlights four stages of formation and strengthening the position of Orthodoxy in the region:- the first phase (1793-1795) - the period when Podillya Orthodox parishes were a part of Minsk, Izyaslav and Bratslav Eparchy;- the second phase (1795-1819) - the formation of Podillya Orthodox Eparchy, forming of church structure (spiritual consistory, spiritual government, charities districts, parishes, monasteries, schools, etc.), organization and supervision of the Orthodox clergy, religious monasteries, parochial schools, religious schools and seminary by imperial standards;- the third phase (1819-1830) - the period of the formation of indifferent attitude to the needs of Orthodox people from government and religious structures;- the fourth stage (1831-1855) - turn off the double policy in relation to Catholicism and Union Church after the Polish uprising in 1830-1831 on Pravoberezhya and Podillya, gradual elimination of the Greek-Catholic denomination in these areas (1839), a gradual turn to the establishment of Orthodoxy as the dominant confession in the region.
