Essay

This thesis is the first attempt in Ukrainian Slavistics to study the Czech postmodern prose as a separate fragment of the "Prague text". The work traces the Czech capital's cultural myth formation history, describes the stages in the evolution and development of the "Prague text", identifies its key motives and analyses the dynamics of variations in the depiction of Prague's topos in literary texts. Based on the mythopoetic analysis of the works by the modern Czech prose writers Michal Ajvaz (The Other City novel) and Daniela Hodrova (Agonizing city trilogy) the principal poetical characteristics of the "Prague text" of the 1990's are studied and its connection with the traditional perception of Prague as a mystical topos in the texts of the late XIX - early XX centuries is established.
