Essay

There was a strong correlation between parents living in areas polluted by both chemical and radiation waste and infants born with congenital abnormalities. Epidemiological description of the congenital malformations in Cherkassi region is presented. It estimates the incidence of congenital abnormalities among all newborns (27,4±1,5) ‰, infants born alive (27±1,5) ‰ and stillborn babies (94,9±37,2) ‰. The incidence of congenital abnormalities was particularly high in the main cities of the oblast (Cherkassi, Uman, Smela) at that time and was 37,4 ‰, 42,5 ‰, 36,7 ‰, respectively. These levels were significantly higher than the average level for the region. The data from this study provides the basis for modifying the measures used for prevention of congenital abnormalities among newborn.
