The thesis discloses comprehensively socio-political and scientific activity of Osyp Makovey. Using numerous historical sources and documents, the author accomplished a comprehensive analysis of Osyp Makovey's activity in public and scientific life of Ukrainians at the territory of Western Ukraine at the end of 19th - the first quarter of 20th century. Based on factual material author also made analysis of his figure as a patriot and educator, journalist and editor, critic and essayist, historian and anthropologist, politician and public figure, literary critic.
