Essay

The object of the research – policy by Soviet state and also German occupation administration concerning ethnic Germans on the territory of the Left-Bank Ukraine in 1941-1945. The dissertation purpose – illumination of process of reprisals and deportations, which were spent by Soviet authority concerning ethnic Germans on the territory of the Left-Bank Ukraine during the Second World War, and also features of politics of German occupation authorities in this region (1941-1943). Methods: analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, explanation, search, logic method; historical-genetic (retrospective) and historical-comparative. Scientific novelty: based on a wide range of sources, the dissertation, for the first time in Ukrainian historiography, explores peculiarities of repressive policy by Soviet state towards German ethnic minority on the territory of the Left-Bank Ukraine during the Second World War; considerable attention within the scope of the research is also paid to situation of ethnic Germans in this region during occupation; it is shown that as early as in the 1920s-1930s Soviet leaders developed negative attitude towards German population of the USSR, which essentially determined its future fate during the Second World War; the paper scrutinizes reasons, stages, mechanisms and consequences of repressions and deportations of ethnic Germans on the territory of the Left-Bank Ukraine at the beginning of war between the USSR and Germany. The fate of German population who found themselves in special settlements is briefly covered; filtration process, records management and main sanctions against citizens of German origin by Soviet security authorities in 1943-1945 are studied; also, general aspects of ethnic Germans’ repatriation at the end of the war are mentioned. Practical value of research: the results of research can be used at a spelling of monographic and generalizing works on a history of national minority of Ukraine, Soviet national politics, occupation mode in Ukraine during the Second World War.
