Essay

Object: seed viability characteristics of different varieties of bread and durum winter wheat, winter and spring barley. Aim: to studying of influence of growing conditions and keeping of crop seed on its quality and period of storage. Methods: field, laboratory, phenological investigations, statistic. Novelty: seed viability depended on the degree of their germination in the ears on standing crop provoked by wet weather during the harvest period. In general, the germinated and then dried up seeds had laboratory germination and other indexes of sowing qualities as non-germinated seeds had. However, in the course of storage of such seeds under natural conditions (an unheated premise) their viability sharply decreased. Results: the results of studying the influence of the conditions of cereal crops seed production and storage on seed quality and economic longevity have been presented. The seed formed in the south of Ukraine in the years with favorable weather conditions were characterized by high viability and the long period of storage, especially under the controlled climate conditions (the temperature of +4°С, hermetic packing). Seed storage length to a great extent depended on the initial humidity of seeds. The seed dried up to humidity of 4.7-5.4% could keep high viability during eight and more years under the controlled climate conditions. Application stage: the study results were used in working out of new national seed standards. Application area: SIE of NAAN, MinAPK of Ukraine.
